A Number of Hurt as In-Flight Disturbance Hits Delta Aircraft Arriving in Sydney, Australia

Multiple passengers and crew were hurt when a Delta Airlines aircraft traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney encountered significant turbulence Friday morning.

Delta Flight 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier stated. Several cabin crew members sustained injuries.

Local paramedics stated they treated five patients, and transferred a trio to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included back pain and head pain. The injured were between their 30s to 70s.

The event represents the most recent case of planes experiencing turbulence, with experts pointing out that shifting climate patterns is a key driver.

On board were 245 people and 15 crew members on the wide-body jet, the official added, adding that the plane arrived "without further incident" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on the day in question.

The NSW Ambulance Service indicated they received a call just only 180 seconds ahead of the plane landed, and response teams were ready and waiting at the airport.

Why plane turbulence is becoming increasingly prevalent - and potentially more dangerous.

In the previous year, twenty-five passengers and crew were hurt when a Delta Airlines flight, flying from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, experienced "severe" rough air just a couple of hours into the lengthy trip, and diverted for an emergency landing.

Recently, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight went through a frightening five seconds of severe turbulence. An individual lost their life and numerous people sustained injuries, as individuals not fastened in were thrown from their seats and fell back down.

Bumpy air is fairly routine during flights, and while cases of significant turbulence seem to be rising, they are remained quite uncommon.

Estimates show that there are around 5,000 incidents of severe or worse turbulence each year, out of a total of over 35 million aircraft departures that now take off worldwide.

Strong atmospheric disturbance is defined as when the sudden jolts of a plane experiencing rough air masses generate greater than 1.5g-force on your body - sufficient force to lift you out of your seat if you were not fastened by a seatbelt.

As global warming shifts weather patterns, experts warn that commercial aviation could become more turbulent: temperature changes and changing jet streams in the jet stream level are projected to boost the frequency and intensity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
