RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
